Authors That Establish the Perfect Mood for the Books We Read.
by JLNicky
Regarding Lesbian Literature, we all want that perfect emotion to come crashing through as we immerse ourselves in a book. The mood of the story sets the swing in motion. And there are so many moods to choose from.
The Thrill.
If you are looking for the thrill of an exciting story, you find these authors that deliver. Without Warning (Shaken, #1) by K.G. MacGregor an earthquake strikes, how do the four main characters handle it? Kiss the Girl (Soho Loft #1) by Melissa Brayden, an enemy-to-lover story, pits two women against the same marketing campaign bid. Thirteen Hours by Meghan O’Brien of pure sensuality when you’re stuck in an elevator together. Madam President by Blayne Cooper, it will happen and we can only hope she is this strong and caring.
Romance.
Perhaps you desire a lovely touch of romance, of building a relationship, of seeing the rose unfold and letting your heart grow two sizes too big. Try Something in The Wine (The Moonstone Series, #1) by Jae, where a blind date turns out to be a woman. Listen to the Denial by Jackie Kennedy where two women who are so attracted, they fight it in fear. Ride along in Just Jorie by Robin Alexander when a car ride across the country reveals truths and attractions. Or walk the miles with Trail Blazer by Nicolette Dane, where two friends hike Maine’s 100 Mile Wilderness trail to figure it all out.
Fantasy.
In the exciting world of Fantasy, there are forever unforgotten books such as The Warrior’s Path (When Women Were Warriors, #1) by Catherine M. Wilson. The title says it all (so, so good). Or the vampire romance Better Off Red (Vampire Sorority Sisters, #1) by Rebekah Weatherspoon (sizzling hot 20 chili peppers). Shift gears to read the Shape-shifter series in Second Nature by Jae or a mystery shape-shifter novel in Wild (Selene and Eve #1) by Meghan O’Brien. Meghan O. also wrote The Three of a not-so-distant future, not unlike The Handmaid’s Tale, which is completely wrong and yet, with the best combination of partners, becomes completely right. And don’t forget the swashbuckling pirate story, The Raven and the Banshee, by author Carolyn Elizabeth that takes us on an adventure like no other. If you are looking for a new read, I’ve posted my serialized novel Sparrows Legacy (Magic of Flarentine Series #1) out on Kindle Vella where you can read the first three chapters for free.
Humor.
Maybe you need to laugh till you cry? Look at these incredible offerings. No Strings by Lucy Bexley (pretty much anything by Lucy makes you 🡨snort <—huge fan) where Puppeteer strings up a TV Station owner into a much-needed romance. Or read Delilah Green Doesn’t Care (Bright Falls #1) by Ashley Herring Blake, returning home a successful and becoming attracted to someone who in the past was all wrong is a thing. Then there is the coming out story of Casting Lacey by Elle Spencer, where two women play lovers to fool the world and themselves. A must-read is Who’d Have Thought by G. Benson when Doctor finds Nurse and they marry quickly to get the big bucks inheritance. Side note: I just love G Benson for their sensitivity to gender-specific characters. Another spicy laugh is Hotel Queens by Lee Winter, where the ice queen alpha matches the fire queen alpha and they heat to melt together. These stories are only a drop in the bucket of what’s out there. They all have lively banter with great characters, spewing drink moments, and still that romantic entanglement that we all look forward to in the HEA.
Bluntly stated, as a reader, you need to feel exactly the way you think the story should make you feel. I get that. If I’m looking to cheer myself up, I don’t read a thrill ride. These stories mentioned provide the enhanced moods exactly as they intend. And all of them seem more clever than I could ever hope to be. As some of the most well-loved works in Lesbian romance (according to reviews and Goodreads.com), peruse the 5-star judgments if you really need to consider the quality before you dive in. As a writer, I hope to contribute to the enjoyment of these emotions we get to experience within the pages offered here. I call for a little kudo to the best books I’ve enjoyed over the years, those that I will continue to re-read every time the mood strikes. Huzzah!
Please be on the lookout for my upcoming Kindle Vella series Civil Love, a historical romance to be released in September. I hope you enjoyed this blog.
